One nasty bitch and three... no, four... no... heck, who cares how many she screwed... anyway, several stupid men around her, all caught in a boring swirl of "sexual revolution" with pelvic motions replacing emotions and feelings...So boring it made my jaw lock. Pure French caka that you will see acclaimed time and again.
Kudos to Truffaut for succeeding in making sex look as boring taking out garbage.
Follow Ups:
Because I think highly of this film, but have not seen it yet for a decade, and having it unopened on my self I will have one more view on it in the next days.
So I will come back with fresh amunition....

Taking out the garbabe here is frought with passion, "Damn it, it IS your turn!"
One can also see various creatures near the garbage bins at night, such as armadillos, racoons, assorted garden snakes, and palm rats. Quite interesting!
Actually, J&J IS the most boring of the "great" films I've seen. Not long ago, I rented it to see if my tastes had "matured" since I saw it 15 years ago. Nope.
Not only is the direction poor, there is no memorable scene. But the malaise goes deeper: a film that places Jeanne as the femme fatale already is doomed. She looks nasty, ill-humored, pasty-faced, and her body looks doughy.
Truffaut? Shoot the Piano Player, a couple of the "400 Blows" installments...and a lot of dreck.
Same here... seen long ago, then so well forgotten I thought I have not seen it, and now this...But didn't you see that Jules was really William Buckley Jr? Good thing he moved on from making movies to making waves.
The only human face in the whole fiasco was Gilberte - one could feel a compassion for her, being caught in that dumb and boring game with no end, and fortunately for her the end came, so she was finally free to move on with her life.
I disagree, Victor! While Truffaut was hit-or-miss after 1962, his first three films are amazing. In "Jules et Jim," Moreau's character Catherine is a woman who wants to set the rules and then change them as she goes along. How does she differ in that from any other woman (or for that matter, man)? You echo the U.S. Catholic Church's film office with your condemnation of how she uses and enjoys sex. But I have never heard of an "uncut" version of this film with pelvic motions. This is a film with nothing but emotions and feelings!Hasn't someone ever entered your life, turned it upside down, and then left you with just the dream (or the nightmare) of the possibility of catching that person? (You needn't answer this question...please allow me to be rhetorical here.)
Yes, these three and their friends can be eye-rollingly pretentious, but isn't that true of all young self-styled "bohemians"? Truffaut has made a wonderful film that really captures a group of people and the time they live in.
And Marie Dubois! As patrickU might say, "Hehe!"
Would that every film about people in "unconventional" living situations were as good as "Jules et Jim".
Take care and have fun, Victor!
