Just happened to watch it in HighDef and was blown away by this early (1979) masterwork by Francis. So much is said by the incredible cine photography and it sweeps you away and suspends reality, especially during the island scenes where the young lad and the horse befriend each other and the bond is fixed. Mickey Rooney is perfect in his role and the horse should have won an Oscar. Great film.
Follow Ups:
My God, I have seen it back then. I remember almost nothing but it was tender and beautiful.
This movie has been a favorite at my house for years, and it begs for a new special edition DVD (the old one is somewhat grainy and non-anamorphic, with no extras apart from the trailer).A wonderful story, beautifully shot and realized on film. Carroll Ballard has 2 other films that are well worth viewing, too-Fly Away Home and Never Cry Wolf (the latter is especially good).
509 on Direct TeeVee.
Missed it on my DISH HBO HD. It's only times like these I wish I had HD DVR..
is that I knew nothing of this film. In 1979 I think the 60's were winding down or something. I may have missed a lot of things!! I was dusted by it. I did not get the name of the cinephotographer however, do you know it?
Pauline Kael described the Black Stallion as "quite possibly the best children's film ever made"Grins
guess I have to see the sequel......
But it lacks the poetry and wonder of the original, which is a true classic.BTW, director Carroll Ballard has a new film coming out in a couple of weeks (see link).
did the camera work. A distinguished cinema photographer if there ever was one.
it is a really good movie. carroll ballard should get some credit for actually directing the movie. rhu
