Neat list. Where are "metropolis," "2001 - A Space Odyssey" (1967) "A Clockwork Orange" (1972?) classics all, IMHO.I'd pick any of them over Mars Attacks! which, frankly, sucked. It was supposed to be funny but really wasn't. It was just stoopid.
Jack Nicholson's worst film -- and I like Jack Nicholson.
Since this is a "favorites" list,(which I thought I made clear) I really don't think I have to
justify why they were excluded; however, for the sake of civility,
I will answer your query. Yes, I know they are classics, Metropolis
and 2001 were so plodding that I got bored with them in large parts,
Clockwork Orange came across a little too cynical for me. This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy these
films to some extent, because I did, it's just that they aren't MY
FAVORITES. Excuse me if this strikes you as politically incorrect.
As far Mars Attacks! goes, you thought it was not funny, I did -

...can't be all bad. Wonder whatever happened to his brother Nit?
Don't know what happened to his brothers, but Slims reportedly on the road with
his son, Byron. Slim has sold over 70 million records worldwide; his
silky, yodely voice has soothed the nerves of countless fans, except of course, those pesky little alien invaders that went "Yak!Yak!Yak!".

I also think that Tom Jones's numbers contibuted greatly to the film ;)
