You have to realize that S. is a pick of the crop from HBO. Did you ever watch, say, Arlen? Or the dreadful Sex in the City?As for the networks, many, many episodes of NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life on the Streets (somewhat similar genre) can be matched show-for-show against S.
Then we have the tremendously exciting 24.
Hope you don't just enjoy hearing "fucking" all the time, it's such a boring, repetitive adjective.

As I mentioned in my original post, I don't have HBO. But just for the record, no, I have never seen Sex in the City or Arlen. As far as current network television, there is not a single show I would go out of my way to see. I only watch a couple hours of tv a week, and its usually 20-30 minute bites of news/discovery channel/history channel or nature channel. I watch two or three (DVD) movies a week though.NYPD Blue was a good show. I think I have seen most of those via re-runs. Never a big fan of Homocide though.
...how do you know?

That was my all-time favorite. It lasted longer than anybody expected, but it was a sad day when that show was finally pulled...
I found that the first couple of years were superb but over thime after that the editing became too frenetic for me. The best episode
was the early one where the lead put earphones on his partner who was in a coma and played Miles Davis.
I agree that there is some excellent network shows but they were pretty sparce. For the record, I thought Homicide was one of the best things ever on tv. HBO does have a bunch of good shows: The Wire, Deadwood, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Oz and some good made movies too. What is really sad is that these series are much better than 95% of the movies released out there.
-- and quite ignoring the best the networks have to offer, in series that go twenty-two episodes per year, year after year. HBO? Twelve, maybe, every year. Hardly fair!
Certainly not all of network tv goes to that standard. There is still network tv which betters most movies. I don't watch a lot of non HBO series and I don't watch any of the reality shows but Arrested Development for one. A few years ago Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were pretty darn good. Some people swear to West Wing, 24, Alias and others (I haven't caught any of these). The point is that the talent in acting, writing and directing seem to be in tv. Maybe its because there are more inexpensive things you can do now with tv. Maybe its because the movie system is pretty well geared to blowing things up and trying to make blockbusters while ignoring characters and stories. Frankly, the best movie I saw last year was "The Incredibles" and the oscar movies all were pretty second rate.
A movie is like a short story, a TV series is like a novel. Each has its adherents and fans.
