Are any of you looking forward to the opening of this movie? It has been almost 30 years since the 4th episode came out I wonder if we have learned anything.
Follow Ups:
we had friends in visiting from out-of-town and saw a simple black newspaper ad which read...."A Long Time Ago, In a galaxy far, far, away.... and thought that looks interesting, let's go! People were jumping up and down on their seats screaming with joy by the time the credits rolled at the end of the film. The next day it opened to general release and lines around the block...None of the episodes has come close to the excitement of that experience, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this last installment...
But at least we were 'there', so to speak. These days it seems all one can do is fend off disappointment. And am I alone in preferring the use of models and animation as opposed to CGI for a more 'visceral feel'? CGI stuff seems to lack substance and mass to these eyes, no matter how beautifully its drawn. I guess the elusive 'CGI reality algorithm' still eludes even Lucasfilm.
Big J.
By the 80's, models in films looked pretty darn good. The new movies started to take on a 'synthetic' feel, sorta like watching a video game on the big screen with live actors walking in front of it. The best cgi is the stuff YOU CAN'T TELL is cgi. There have been a couple of films that used it in the proper amount and context(T2, Dark City). Maybe there should be a percentage that one shouldn't go past when using computer effects in a movie. Sorta like eating a huge slice of frosting with a little cake smeared on top, I like my cake the other way. I just wanna see the Emperor swinging his light saber!
Me too. But what I really want to see is the moment we see Sifo Dyas (is that right?)/Palpatine morphs into Darth Sidious/Emperor - if indeed such an event takes place on camera - ie, when The Sith are revealed. Skin goes all heavy and so on... [pass th popcorn]...
Big J.
but I thought I saw a scene where multiple jedi were hassling Palp(probably saying something like 'we KNOW who you really are you dirtbag!')and it looked like he popped a light saber out of his sleeve, sorta like Deniro's gun in taxi driver. I CAN'T WAIT! Don't know if I can take any more of Yoda flying through the air though.
Yeah, digital sux. Music .... or movies. No matter.
I was present and accounted for at the Chinese, opening day. Waaaay back when, in a cinematic galaxy far away. When the tall screen began to roll the cylinder generated credits, the crowd erupted. Electricity. Magic.Somewhere in there, I managed to go to one of the numeric offerings (which number in the series, I don't recall). Touted loudly: "one of only X number (3?, 6?) theaters in the world to offer dig projection.
Yep, giant screen dig. What a joke. I spent most of my time cackling at the continuous/ever present motion artifacts. I honestly hope you enjoy the film. Me, I'm resigned to the garbage, created from bits no less. That is Hollywood.
Best movie I've seen this year? The Incredibles. Though it didn't hold up to a second in theater viewing.
holistic cinema experience. I don't hold out much hope for the movie, but I'll be going with a few of the friends with whom I saw the first one (IV). Nostalgia for the collective 'big screen feeling' in these days of HE (which I'll be joining before long).
Big J.
Just hoping for some good light saber fights.
