It has never been one of my favorite films, but then I do not consider Pollack anything spectacular in general. I think this and things like Out of Africa truly represent the limit of his incompetence. He is a professional with no soul.
Follow Ups:
I would not be so severe with " Out of Africa ! It has some lovely scenery there...In Africa...
"Tootsie" and 'Three Days of the Condor" the recent "The Interpreter"?
Condor I didn't like at all (but perhaps largely due to its star choice - Redford), and my memory of Tootsie is pretty old, I thought it was cute but not significant... I only saw it when it came out though. The Interpreter I have not seen yet. I have mixed emotions on Pollack. I like watching him speak, he loves movies and can talk about them well (much like Tarantino BTW), and he is a true professional, deeply involved in movies business, but his directing doesn't seem to have a real spark to it. In that sense it is very Hollywood - a solid professisonally done entertainment, but not more than that.
I have to agree that this pretty much sums up The Interpreter. I enjoyed Nicole and Penn's performances...mostly, but the plot kind of dried up in the end and didn't really resolve itself terribly well.It just seemed a bit devoid of that something.....the same thing that Ray Charles had oozing and dripping from everything he did.
