Maybe Patrick and others could comment on them from other country's perspectives. In the USSR you could not get them. One of a few good things about the restrictive Soviet culture... methink. There was no problem finding a Fellini, though.

Patrick´s comment.Yes there where more English than American, no wonder Ian was the perfect " look at me I am English " and if you compare to the books as far as the two or three first movies goes, Sean was the perfect match.
Of course it is kid stuff, but back then I did love them so the books too.
Now it is only nostalgia.
