This is a very realistic study of an urban firehouse crew told through the flashback eyes of a ten year veteran trapped in the basement of a collapsed warehouse. John Travolta is very good as the fie house captain who takes the fireman under his wing when the young probe origianlly reports for duty. I found this to be much better than Ron Howard's "Backdraft" (although not as loud).
Follow Ups:
I enjoyed this film most out of all the firefighter movies I've seen, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "realistic." For example, the pick-up scene at the grocery store really doesn't happen..
