I remember reading the review in the San Fran rag when I was out there on bidness. * was all it got. Thought I, no way it can be that bad. And it wasn't. A very strangely edited film, a very individualistic directing style that I don't remember ever seeing again (not necessarily a bad thing). Performances WAYYY over the top, but strangely effective. I'd give it the old **1/2 stars cop out. 1st half definitely better than the 2nd and Juliette Lewis very convincing, such promise.....

The performances indeed are over the top, so as to make the characters caricatures.
The original is art, this is artifice.

  and agree on artifice.
  however, for some strange reason, I like watching the remake. Doesn't mean I like it as art, but I like WATCHING it. Rather that than say, House of Sand And Fog, an altogether good movie but not a terribly WATCHABLE movie.
