What do you think? Recommended? Some of Altmans' stuff I really like (Gosford Park, Nashville, The Player) but I've seen a couple duds. (Made the mistake of watching Kansas City a couple week ago - yawn.) Anyway, I'm curious about Short Cuts as its based upon (I think) short stories of Raymond Carver. The local independent record store has a copy of the Short Cuts Criterion DVD set. Is it worth picking up?

...and after that its all downhill.
Short Cuts does string together some of Raymand Carver's best short stories, and IMO does it very, very well. It is not done in the style of the Player, i.e. as an homage to a filmmaker (Welles). By Altman's standards it is rather straightforward. I suspect he got more of a kick out of stringing these "unconnected" short stories together than he would've by jazzing it up pictorially.I believe it to be a labor of love for an author, and works as such. If you've seen Crash recently it ought to put you in mind of this. But this one's better, IMO. And well woth watching despite the carping on this forum.
dated. I recently saw McCabe and Mrs. Miller and it was enjoyable but not as good as it was upon release. The very "artistic" directing style of Altman doesn't age well, kind of like seeing someone in bell-bottoms today.
It is a good movie but VERY cynical.

I think anyone interested in movies should see it. My original comments had to do with purely artistic merits.
