Halliwell's Film Guide has voted this post war Japanese classic by Ozu as the greatest film of all time. Full story in:http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,4120,1503313,00.html
Follow Ups:
Ozu is, I think, Japan's greatest master, and this film demonstrates why.It also contains one of the most devastating, crushing, poignant single lines of dialogue ever spoken, which I will not spoil for those who haven't seen it.
The film is indeed incredible in its subtlety and simplicity, yet depth. So I might not agree with the choice, but I am not going to disagree with it.
...Renoir's Rules Of The Game. So there. But Ozu's Tokyo Story is right up there with it. You could make a case for other Ozu's as well, just as you could for Grand Illusion.
The Sight & Sound poll, silly buggers, voted Citizen Kane best of all time.
I think it is "Citizen Kane".

Oscars be awarded to Director and film but the lead is stiffed?
The only explanation I can think of is...racism. John deserved it, overwhelmingly. What an amazing portrait. Simply amazing, even after many repeated viewings.
But he just didn't look as good a Pu Yi. 8^)
photo, painting, sculpture, building, novel, etc?
Now, a list of 15 or 20 is less so but still...
