Picked up this DVD for a whopping $5.99 yesterday. Haven't seen this movie in about 10 years. A young Sean Penn and Christopher Walken play the main characters, but there are a few other (now) fairly famous actors as well. (Keefer S, Crispin Glover and Chris Penn and Mary Stuart Masterson.) Anyway this movie is based on a true story about a career criminal (played by Walken in the movie) and his teenage son (Penn.) Penn and his younger brother seek approval from their father, who has been out of their lives for most of their childhood. Walken lets the teenagers and a couple of their dumb friends into his gang of thieves, but they soon f*ck up a job and get busted by the police. I won't spoil the rest of the movie...... IMHO Sean Penn was a much more exciting actor when he was younger. Now he has become a one trick pony. And of course Walken is always terrific.
Follow Ups:
have won an Oscar, and Penn was marvelous, too.
Some of the guys who were in the gang seemed almost to be too believable, like the director got real hoods. Scary movie. Scary as hell.
Anyone who hasn't seen it owes themselves a favor: it takes realism to another level.
I saw it back in the 80s on a pan'n'scan VHS, but recently saw a nice widescreen print on TMC (I think). It's luscious.
