meant to be a portrayal of a guy unravelling but it sheds no new light on these types of personalities, is predictable, and is utterly negative.
"Taxi Driver" covered the same ground; in this movie, neither the writing nor Penn's acting (I suppose he did what he could with such a bland characterization) rise very high.
In the end, who cares what happens to such a jerk?
Seems to me the director didn't know what to say so his choices ultimately said nothing. At least a documentary has the benefit of being true: I know, it's supposedly based on a true story. Well, a documentary--to be successful--would have had to show some of the personality traits that led to the unweaving.
A movie must function w/in the universe it creates: this one failed to answer any questions, leaving a vacuum to be filled by...nihilism.
