As far as I can tell, the world public has been unaware or unconcerned about his fight with the Italian one.

There is almost always " une descente aux enfers " for an artist after his death. I would also say that a part of his films are just vulgar as you can see his love to this male prostitutes on some of them.
His talent went far beyond the use of mere shock value, and is films are holding up very well.
