The plot: Old lady starts selling pot in order to raise money. The film was very pleasant, watchable, and entertaining. Brenda Blethyn is so good because she is, I would imagine, like the regular lady down at the pub, and acts like it. See her in "Little Voice" for a contrasting performance, whereas instead of having a couple of cocktails, she closes the bar down everynight. But I am not sure how this premised could make a "great" film. Perhaps accept it for what it is, rather that criticize it for what it is not, and probably could not be, given the premise.
Follow Ups:
No, no. I think it could have been in the vein of " Ladykillers " as the irony and description was quite satiric in the first third into it.
In this way it could have been much better.

Well I am not aware of a remake! I look and did only found a US TV production, is this what you mean?
The original was the 1955 film starring Alec Guinness, unseen by me. The remake was the Coen Brother's 2004 film starring Tom Hanks in the Guinness role. I bought the latter to keep my Coen Brother's collection up to date, but I thought it disappointing. I probably should see the original.
OH! I see we were speaking of two different films!!!It may be because I had problems with my Email post and lost somehow the thread.
Now back to the point.
You must see the Guiness film ( The Ladykillers ) as a fine example at British humour!
I would go so far as to say that is one one has to see even if it is not his style.
A classic.
PS: I did not see the remake as all the critics I read were so bad...And the trailer did not inspired me to.....
