I usually don't care for Robin Williams movies but I find this one to be very charming and funny. Williams plays a governess who applies for a job with ex-wife Sally Fields to tend their children. At first the kids don't recognize him. Williams' performance here is as good as Dustin Hoffman's in "Tootsie".
Follow Ups:
Frankly, Some Like it Hot should have been the end of the genre.
Next came the arrested development movies, which Robin bravely also signed on for. Then, he did a turn as the psycho serial killer(s).
Robin, our Man For All Seasons.
For me, Robin Williams falls into love/hate. Some films, I think he does a good job, services the plot and story, and acts within the pace of the film. Other times, he acts so goofy, and his performance exists on it's own, with no eye toward the plot. I truly enjoyed him in this film, probably because he spent most of his screen time as someone else, and was probably forced to tone down his schtick in service of the plot. One of those films that has a heart, without being overly melodramatic.
Robin Williams and Jim Carey fall into the same boat: they need a very good director to reign them in. Compare, for example, Dean Poet's Society and The Truman Show--liked both actors in those movies as Peter Weir kept them on a tight leash.
