Kubrick chose him because he DOES come off as shallow, just as was done in WoTW, that IS his interesting character flaw.

...and it works when that flaw is explored. In Eyes Wide Shut, it was his view of sexuality that was shallow. In WoTW, it was his irresponsibility.
They tried to do the same thing with Rain Man, but the subject matter just didn't interest me.

I think Kubrick was a dark angel for both actors marriage, not that he did do something what would have end their union, no just hasten the end of it.
But who knows...
