now this is a strange film.
Kinski is at his most maniacal, from the first frame. No change, no escalation of madness...just the same lunacy from the get go.
It seemed pretty ridiculous until I realized it's an allegory. Made in '76, with WWII still, quite obviously, lodged in Herzog's mind, the character of Kinski is meant to portray...Germany.
Driven mad afer WWII by poverty and crazed politicians and military leaders, its descent into murderous barbarity, ultimately suicidal, is what awaited it.
Not an easy movie to watch but its stark brutality was mesmerizing.
If you must have something totally different, look no further.
Follow Ups:
...the play itself is pretty vivid if done well. And it was adapted into one of the greatest of all 20thC operas, called "Wozzeck" by Alban Berg.

Seems like some of you have politicized your tastes ... worrying more about the actor's activities outside of his/her films.I have Woyzeck, Nosferatu, Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo and Kaspar Hauser (no Kinski) all on DVD, all wonderful.
Have not looked in on the Film forum for some time, seeing this and the comments on WoTW ... is this just another piss ant forum? Why not just do this in the Outside?
The Kinski-Herzog combo never attracted me. Especially if you know the personalities, the rotten spoiled overbearing egotistical to the stars Kinski and accomodating Herzog... it had to produce something unattractive. Some of Kinski's outbursts were simply amazing in their viciousness. So you can say I simply don't care for those films. The only good thing about Aguirre was his sword.
I think I did get myself to stay for twenty minutes watching this film, after I could not stand one more minute.
Congratulations for you subborness!
If "Woyzeck" sets the stage for Kinski to be ever more insane than he is in those 2 films it must be quite somethin'
maybe that's why the animosity?
Anyhow, I've seen both other films you mention and wasn't delighted with either. I will re-visit them but they bored me at first viewing years ago. Woyzeck is so powerful I find myself thinking of many of the scenes again and again, dammit!
Cobra Verde is another collaboration between these two loonies and I'm going to watch it next.
