Except for a hokey romance between Ensign Keith and a nightclub singer this is very well done and holds up very well when watched today. Humphrey Bogart is terrific as the the half crazed by the book minesweeper captain who is relieved of duty by his executive officer during a typhoon in 1944. Author Herman Wouk took the court martial at the end and made it into a stage play which Robert Altman later filmed. Both are very well done and would make a nice double feature. In a couple of scenes some fities cars are shown in what is supposed to be World War II.
Follow Ups:
It so happened that I saw it again just a few days ago. I agree on Bogart, but the rest of the boys came straight off Normal Rockwell picture, and did not make any good impression at all.
I thought his performance was outstanding, as good as Bogart's.
