Are there particular actors that you find hard to accept in roles, not because they are miscast, but because the actor's own persona interferes with the character s/he is playing? For example, I have trouble accepting John Travolta, Jim Carey, and now Tom Cruise in any role because I cannot suspend disbelief long enough to accepted them.

Follow Ups:
...has to do with the way most American actors are trained. I think the Method, for example, really had a bad effect on film acting. One thing I hate is going to the movies and thinking, "Hey, Mr. Movie Star is really acting here." You shouldn't see the acting.
European-schooled actors just seem to be able to disappear into characters better. A generalization, I know.
...there seems to be a problem with overexposure for some stars. What's interesting is some of the names NOT showing up: Robert DeNiro, Johnny Dep for example.

I must have a superior ability to suspend my disbelief. No actor gets in the way for me.

Sounds like that would be one very short list.I know... I know... Ronald Reagan!
nt
James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Richard Harris, Steve Mcqueen, Woodrow Parfrey....oh wait, they aren't around anymore :( My live actor list is even shorter. John Quade is great but haven't seen him in over a decade.
Notice, Victor, that it is mostly male actors....

I find him a bit different in each role, which means at least to me that he is doing something right. I don't know if it is direction or acting, but there is some consistency there in unique characters.

I have a hard time dealing with Tom's Hanky. He's OK in some comedies, but most of his more serious stuff make him look like he's just pretending to be serious. I haven't liked much of his stuff after Forest Gump.
Jack
but dammit he's serious! ;-)

Jimmy Stewart, Cher, Adam Sandler, Jack Lemmon, Bruce Willis, Martin Landau, Nicolas Cage, Jamie Foxx, Bette Midler, Alan Arkin, Alan King, Julia Roberts, Walter Matthau, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Madonna, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, Harrison Ford, Ronald Reagan, and oh so many more.
..meanwhile, in France, I'd vote for Gerard Depardieu.

Tha´s all.
..less caricatured, like in 'la lune dans le caniveau' he was riveting.
I think he just prefers eating & drinking now.

Could you share with us any actors or films you do like?
Olivier Gourmet, Eugene Levy, Kinuyo Tanaka, Setsuko Hara, Grazyna Szapolowska, Michael Palin, Jeanne Moreau, Erland Josephson, Catherine Deneuve, Takashi Shimura, Jason Schwartzman, Ingrid Thulin, Robert De Niro, Chishu Ryu, Kerry Fox, Naomi Watts, Peter Falk, Brigitte Mira, Anatoly Solonitsin, Liv Ullmann, W.C. Fields, Tom Courtenay, Michel Simon, Harriet Andersson, Seymour Cassel, Eiji Okada, Maggie Cheung Man-yuk, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Leslie Cheung, Ben Gazzara, Anton Walbrook, Deborah Kerr, Frances McDormand, Roger Livesey, Jean Gabin, Hanna Schygulla, Timothy Spall, Moira Shearer, Laurence Olivier, Bill Murray, Gunnar Björnstrand, Max von Sydow, Lily Tomlin, Fred Willard, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Gunnel Lindblom, and plenty more. Anymore questions?
..R.I.P. Happy to see his name pop up here. I really liked him as an actor, and it is a shame we are not going to see more performances from him. Thought the Leslie Cheung/Tony Leung Chiu Wai match up in Happy Together was very enjoyable. Incredible also in Days of Being Wild, and the one thing that sticks out in Temptress Moon for me is the expression he had on his face when on th dance floor with Gong Li toward the end of the film. In fact, I'd say I've pretty much enjoyed him in all of his latter day films. Amazing how he developed from the barely serviceable actor he was in A Better Tomorrow. Any particular performance of his that pops out for you?
Happy Together is the one that really stands out for me. That film gets better every time I see it. Leslie possessed a great sensitivity that came through in his performances and made them special. His death certainly was a great loss.
nt
Auteil & Montand's performances, as in Manon des Sources.
Wonderful adaptations of Pagnol.
z
...were far more interesting...he was more 'cameo' compared to there performances...Imho
In the film´s film´s Asylum.
Nicholas Cage find annoying in everything he does....Reeves always reminds me of the line from "A Chorus Line"..."if Troy Donahue can be a movie star, then I can be a movie star".
I've only seen one Nic Cage movie, and one was enough. Seems Reeves tops other people's lists too, i'm not alone. How do they pull off these scams?
Will Ferrell
Adam Sandler
Nicolas Cage
Cage is a mixed bag, so I won't write off his acting talent completely, and I don't recall having had the "honor" of watching any film Shore has made (I'll just consider myself lucky and leave it at that!). :o)
I just can't believe his roles anymore. Sad.
The original Peewee character was a bit more...ah..."adult" oriented than than the character of Peewee's Playhouse.Nevertheless, I'm still amazed by P'sP - one of the most brilliant, original children shows ever conceived. Watching it now on DVD, I'm as dazzled and baffled by it as I was back in the day.
I can't believe it was ever on network TV.
I usually have no trouble ignoring Mr. Ruben's misdemeanors. We're all human in real life, although Mr. R undoubtedly wished he'd settled playing house with home video. I also have no trouble enjoying his rare performances in various movies.
DOCTOR GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRLIE BOMBS.

To me he just comes across as being a "pretty boy"

Right! Can't see him as Howard Hughes! I thought Tommy Lee Jones did it better in the made for TV film.

his flat, amateurish, almost schoolboyish delivery is off-putting to the extreme. Just listen to his narration in "Dances with Wolves" which nearly ruins for me what is otherwise an excellent film. It makes me feel as if I'm listening to some grade-school kid reading an assignment out loud.
He's battling Keanu for #1 on my dud list, but I haven't seen him in enough movies to put him at the top.
I don't know why I would make an exception for Travolta... possibly because he has two jets parked by his home and wears a pilot's watch? Or perhaps over his performance in PF?But there are many, with TC leading the pack, but people like Ford and Costner are just as good... did I say good? Sorry.

Take your pick...Keanu Reeves
Nick Cage
Tom Cruise
Can anyone here think of another actor with such a seemingly obvious inability to act and led such a charmed career? Is he just really intelligent at picking roles, or does he have a smashing agent? Look at the list of directors and costarts he's worked with, coupled with the marvelous timing of the hits he's had. After a few stinkers, he somehow manages to come up with another blockbuster/hit to resuscitate his bankability, just to repeat the cycle again.
He played the perfect vacant, mixed up, clueless kid.
Turns out he probably wasn't acting at all.
He's number one on my "why is this guy making money?" list. Remember, every movie that's good with him in it(Matrix), would have been even BETTER with someone else. There are a few other actors but I can't think of any off hand, he's a great example of making money by just showing up for work.
But I also can't get past John Travolta (or John Revolta as we used to call him in my young days). I think he's over-rated. If he makes 10 movies I'll find maybe 1 or 2 decent (and not necessarily due to his being in the movie). This is obviously my taste. I did not like Pulp Fiction at all, Face Off was horribly stupid IMO.
John Wayne (I'll get a few remarks for this one) is another. I just find he way overacted his roles and all seemed the same. Either that or I just don't like his characters.
Nicolas Cage always seem to play the same part, so I expect the same character no matter the movie. I kinda like him, but only in certain movies (need I mention Face Off again?).
As for females; Nicole Kiddman (sp?). Can't stand her at all in any way. I'll try to get past this as I want to eventually see Bewitched and hopefully enjoy it. I do think she's a great pick for a witch as I personally think she looks like one (no, I don't find her attractive).
...I'd wait to catch Bewitched when it arrives on cable.I'd hate for a fellow inmate to actually fork over $$$ to see this mess.
Kidman is the best thing in it - you have been warned.
I think Travolta was quite good in Primary Colors, Get Shorty and Pulp Fiction. Those I didn't mind paying money to see.
Travolta was quite good in A Civil Action and Primary Colors. I haven't bothered to check out any of his more recent stuff such as Swordfish, Face Off etc.
Civil Action, agreed. Never even heard of Primary Colors. I'll have to rent it soon. Thanks.
BTW, I didn't really like Swordfish either. It wasn't bad... the car was the best part to me. :)
Face Off.... not to give the story away, but two guys (JT and N Cage) exchange faces (Travolta unvoluntarily). Cage with a face and voice only exchanged has "you-know-what" with JT's wife and she doesn't notice it's not her husband???? I mean c'mon, Cage is about 180#, Travolta probably 220#, totally different physique. The movie was bad before that point, barely watchable after IMO.
I was actually very pleased with the "Travolta come back" due his role in "Pulp Fiction". A lot of people dissed that film as just being too violent, but I find it "creepy cool" and very entertaining. It pretty much defined S.L. Jackson and almost type cast Travolta as well.
I can never see a film with Jim Carey or Robin Williams without them getting in the way of the characters. I respect the talents of both and they are certainly funny, but their personalities are too strong to vanish for two solid hours. Williams almost pulled-off a good one with "One Hour Photo", but it was still a little difficult at times and he just flopped in "The Cutter". Carey's trademark expressions seem to appear in every film and no matter how well he does up to that point, he loses me when his shtik surfaces.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" was extremely good, and there was none of his mugging. It was actually a moving performance for me. I think it was a brilliant film - brilliant writing, directing, and acting. For me this was real proof that Carrey can, if fact, act.
I Liked him in "The Majestic" as well. Too bad the film went nowhere.
I have heard of neither of them. The best movies are always the sleepers. It has to have some sort of outrageous or ignorant plot and a load of stupid tricks to make it anywhere near a cinema and even the shelves of many video stores.
-Bill
It was his best dramatic performance and an excellent acting job. Nice movie too.
