Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon star in this legal procedural about two soldiers accused of a murder which occured during a "Code Red" hazing incident at Guantanamo Bay. Even Cruise haters will find him veru good in this role and Nicholson is realistically superb in his role as the base comander. Every time I see this Rob Reiner film I am impressed by how well written, paced, amnd acted it is. Nicholson's climactic outburst has entered the language.

Yes, there were a few, and Nicholson did well, but arent't you tired of seeing vilains come out in their true glory on witness stand?This right after the Kane's Mutiny... well, boys, one is good, two feels repetitive, three gets you nowhere.

I for one am a sucker for trial movies and though as you say they are laden with cliches I never seem to tire of them, particularly when one is as well done as this one is.
Court movies always have strong attraction, as so much gets compressed into limited space, all sorts of sub-stories, discoveries, betrails, shocks, etc. And you are right to some degree that most of them do rely on that sudden turn. Perhaps because without it there is not much else, just bickering, followed by the decision - how exciting! But interesting cases do take place in real life. I remember being glued to the tube for the televized trial of William Kennedy Smith, defended by Roy Black - that was a spectacle beating most court dramas!

Those Kennedys - always with the sex and the booze. Such drama!
The way Roy Black dressed down the lady prosecutor was breathtaking.
years back with such a moment: the eye witness hadn't revealed to the prosecution that she was legally blind! When the defense brought that out, you could have knocked over the prosecutor with a feather.
