I saw the original, it's ok, not exceptional but interesting - so what about the remake? Here's a critic:
SEND A CLEAR MESSAGEIf you value original foreign films and would appreciate more creative subtitling/dubbing, then you have to STOP Hollywood from demeaning the integrity of the material with these sub-par remakes. Your MONEY is your vote in this situation, so don't spend it on a remake at the theater when you can rent the original on DVD. Send Hollywood a message that we want the ORIGINALS, not bad copies.
(2002)-Dir. by Hideo Nakata ("Ringu") - In Japanese (subtitled)
NOTE: This film was only allowed a severely limited release in USA theaters back in June - never came to NYC I know that much] IMDb rating: 7.1
SEND Hollywood A MESSAGE - RENT THE ORIGINAL AND SKIP THE REMAKE!!!

So are you! He hated it and from the clips that I saw during his review piece, I have to agree that it looks stupid. Still haven't seen it however and I have been pleasantly surprised before.

I have always felt that he is the most unreliable "critic" out there.
He looks well fed! ;-)

Water?Hair in front of the face?
Round water storage recepticles?
Drowning girls?
Ghosts?
Are all Japanese films/stories required to have these components now?
...a Japanese guy that proved that water had 'a memory'.
Maybe that's a start? ;0)
And Louisville, and Chicago, and LA and...well, Jap horror fans did have a chance to see it. I can't believe it had no run in NYC area. In any case, the original was atmospheric and creepy but hardly a deathless masterpiece.Frankly, I'd rather pick my battles. I'm more easily outraged over Disney's non-promotion of Miyazaki for example.
If something doesn't happen . . . it won't sell here. Ringu was good, but the excesses had to be added here to make the audience stay awake. (I wonder how The Ring was received in Japan?)
Something about Japanese horror genre disturbs me. I was entertained by movies like "Ringu" "Ju-On" in a morbid way. Last night I watched "Spiral," which was a much worse quality movie but disturbed me anyway. The usual Hollywood gore doesn't bother me, but these Japanese flicks can seriously give you the creeps..
Maybe, because they're so traditionally 'rigid' in real life, they have a way of putting their finger on the unconscious side of things?
Yea, Japanese horror has a way with atmosphere and the bizarre.
> > > Last night I watched "Spiral," which was a much worse quality movie but disturbed me anyway < < <
was that the "spiral" of the Ringu series, or Uzumaki? The latter is truely strange.
I recently watched "Cursed", about a haunted convenience store- another Japanese horror movie that creeps you out in that disturbing way.
Jack
was the one. How'd you like them human snails?!?
Yea, rather strange. I really like that movie anyways. My wife hates it though. If you haven't already, check out Kairo and Cursed(not the werewolf movie, and get the uneditd version). They have that similar sort of creepy feeling. Gotta love the Japanese for their weirdness.

I saw the original. It was a relatively slow paced atmospheric little movie. I have NO desire to see this remake-it looks like a typical Hollywood "in-your-face" horror movie.
I did like the Ring remake, but that is about the only one.
Jack
You mean the old film with Oberon? Dark Waters?
If yes a bad film but with some nostalgia did I found.
"Honogurai mizu no soko kara"
Mind you, the same director (Hideo Nakata) has done the Hollywood remake.
What concessions, though?
He previously directed Central Station and Motorcycle Diaries.

The same director gets a chance to redo the movie with a better budget and you don't think it can be any good, before you even see it? I would at least reserve comment until I have seen them both to make a comparison. They may each be enjoyable in different ways. You never know, you may be surprised and find the new version a great refinement of the original or a complete waste of time. I know that remakes and sequals can be poor, but it's not automatic.
I would agree before seeing it that it is likely to be done in a way that makes it more accessable for an american audience. That is what Hollywood is about, making movies for americans and for profit. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes not, but given the original direction, it sounds like they want to keep some elements very similar which may be distracting to someone who have seen the original, but would not be an issue for a first time viewer. Only time will tell.
-Bill
...where did I say I didn't think it would be any good?
I guess I'm more concerned about 'appropriation' in that the original was given only limited release in the US and the remake will be given worldwide release so reaping in more $$$$ for Hollywood to rip off more films and make more...etc, etc.
Maybe it'll be fun, though, is that what you're saying?
They have to make money and they can afford to make it a bigger deal in terms of advertising. It is a shame that more independent films are not more popular, but neither are plays or opera. It is just the economics of it I think. It's a good story, so they will exploit it. I liked "The Ring".

Oh thank you. No I do not know this one.
