Martin Scorcese directed this sequel to "The Hustler". It stars Tom Cruise as a hot shot but undisiplined young pool hustler who is being coached by aging Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman reprises his role as the original hustler). They travel all over the winter midwest and teach, learn, and fight. The music is loud honky tonk style tunes. The story and acting are better than I expected. Worth a look.
Follow Ups:
.
the pity he resorted to so many mannerisms, like that smarmy smile/grin, the shrug of the shoulders, the "hey kid" line, etc.
The Paul of "Hud" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was magnificent.
Like many actors, he became a parody.
"Long Hot Summer" is one of his best performances, all but forgotten now, along with his portrayal of an attorney in a film with Philadelphia in the title (The Young Philadelphians?).
But I think he has chosen his "senior" roles well, like in "Nobody's Fool", the father in "Message in a Bottle" (the only thing good about that film), and others.
I thought Nobody's Fool was one of Newman's best efforts in a long, long time. Nowadays, he seems better suited toward marketing his salad dressing :-)
