The little town where I grew up is bringing it back after almost 20 years of hiatus. Looking at that place now sure brought back many good old memories for me.I remember coming home one night when I heard a thud noise coming from my passenger window every time I hit a bump on the road. Turned out that it was one of the drive in movie’s speaker system remember those ones grayish in color and squared looking style that came out of the 1940’s Philco table top radios, of which my girlfriend forgot to put it back in its hinges. In addition, along with it was a mile long speaker wire trailing behind it. I was just glad that it did not trip anyone while driving those around the downtown area.
Yes! Those were the days.
Follow Ups:
Here on outer Cape Cod we have one in nearby Wellfleet. The audio system uses FM radio. It sure brings back memories. I remember seeing "2001" at a drive in, with the sound and music coming from a tinny little speaker.
Those were great days. Many a, uhh, moving experience had in those hot, sweaty, mosquito infested drive ins here in the south. Other than the outrageously good popcorn, my fondest recollection is coming back from the concession stand, in mid January, and finding good ol JoAnne wrapped up in a blanket, with only her birthday suit on underneath. FWIW, south of Dallas in Ennis, a new Drive In has cropped up, showing first run films. Drove by it y'day and their marquee had WOTW, Dark Water, Madagascar, and one Batman Begins.
Unforgettable. Even the burgers were great and 'home-made'. Sound, however, was undeniably bad unless you were sat reasonably close to the front and could hear the sound system - alternatively you had those little parking meter style affairs at the side of the car. This was before the day of tuning your radio into a local signal...
Big J.
I remember locking myself out of the car when watching Jaws!
Cetaele (aka Bob)
I usually don’t eat my dinner before then for fear of ejecting them during the course of the movie.I remember watching the double bill of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Exorcist man I have to roll up my window and turn the speaker off and then turn the lights on inside as it was getting too intense for me.
Of course, it did not help as we were on my MGB convertible but at least it was a pretty good try though don’t you think.
