Being a Sci-fi buff, I don't mind science taking a back seat if the movie is decent, and is consistant with itself. It was CGI for its own sake, and most of it was really bad-the dogs is a perfect example. Much like Sky Captain, it gave me a headache. As you said, common sense took a back seat.
The acting was OK, but the characters were rather one demensional, and 30 minutes into the movie, I found myself wishing they would all die.
I've seen some bad movies in my time, but I consider this definitely on my top 10 worst list.

...The director was disappointed at how calm the wolves were; Emmerich wanted them to snarl and fight with each other, but the wrangler said that they would not behave that way since they were from the same pack.

I was disappointed at how fake they looked.
Unfortunately, improving them wouldn't have hlped the movie any.
