I think he achieved hackdon a bit later on. I don't think he was a hack at this point. When this movie was released, its non-linnear form and loosely intertwined stories were unusual for American theatrical movies.I think AG captures a moment of typical small town life rather well. Life *was* a cliche in the early 60's, before the loss of boomer innocence. I was there.
AG may not be a classic for the ages but it's still good fun and well made.
