Supposedly an all-time Russian favorite comedy--certainly not by today's standards. I was surprised at this "curiosity" as it reflected the Western humor of the times. I was also surprised that in '68 there was that much freedom to make such a film. There were a few very sly pokes at "system" with the nosy apartment manager who was constantly questioning things. And, the apartment the protaginist lived in was quite chic compared to what we Westerners had been led to believe. But, the film did involved smugglers, contraband, and the cops who brought them to justice. 8^)The plot centers around a true story of smugglers bringing in diamonds and gold and an unlikely accidental mix up with couriers. It had it's moments but mostly reflected the faux zanyiness of the 60's.

Follow Ups:
It is based on too much inside humor to be fully appreciated by a Westerner, and most of it would not be translatable. With something like that I truly wonder why they even attempted such a release. But believe me, it is a great comedy, and pretty much timeless.
