Kind of low key, closed circuit (you have to understand/like poker a little) drama featuring a superb casting of Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Turturro & Martin Landau with Malkovitch beautifully camping up the bad Russian, by director John Dahl (The Last Seduction).
Slow but draws you in simply by good direction, excellent acting and a solid story.
Follow Ups:
role up to date at that time, excepting "Dangerous Liasion's" where he plays the original Snake Charmer.
I was a bit disappointed in this one. I guess I was expecting more from Norton, but it was not to be. His character was a bit predictable, although maybe that was not so much the actor's fault as the director's? Anyway, Damon's performance was better than I had anticipated, but I thought this movie never really got off the ground.
Yes, I see what you mean by "never really got off the ground" although I think it was just the pace, which I think was intentional.
It was, above all the very fine all round acting (I thought Norton was very convincing)that kept my attention.
Malkovitch, despite his weird russian accent (I think he was trying to differentiate himself from the usual archetypal russian accent!) was just fabulous.
I wish Ed Norton would get with some better directors. Norton was great in American History X and The Score. But I thought 25th Hour was just awful. Weak plot, painfully predictable and uninteresting characters. Not to mention the inclusion of Rosario Dawson, who is about as credible as an actress as Tom Cruise is a psychiatrist.I know Fight Club is sort of a cult classic, but I didn't care for that one either. (Although it was kinda amusing seeing Brad Pitt get the piss beat out of him!) To his credit, Norton's performace in Fight Club was solid, but imho he has yet to top his performances in Amer History X and The Score.
