First post on the film thread I am excited. Based on the Rottentomatoes 90%+ rating of this film we took it out from our local BB---wow what a film. Action up the kazoo, drama, mystery and fine acting. The directing and score were IMO very good. But what was most interesting from an audiophile's perspective was one of the 2 main characters was an audiophile while the other was an audiophile salesman. The high end HK store in which the first 'audio scene' took place had the most beautiful tube amps I have ever seen. Then during an audition of one these amps the buyer suggests an interconnect change to the salesman and once the switch was made they both remark how great of an improvement it revealed. The way the 2 characters listened to a demo, the comments they made, the body language and the type of music played (more on the music later) strongly suggests the director *or somebody in the film) is an audiophile.Questions what was the interconnect and what was the lovely female vocal cd they played? The sound was wonderful. I won't stop looking and asking until I identify and buy that cd.
Follow Ups:
Don't forget to check out Infernal Affairs two and three. All very good and go some way to explaining the whole storyline. Plus audiophile references too.
Other great films too are House of Flying Daggers, Hero and fantastically funny, Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin soccer.
Cheers
..Andrew Lau. Good things about the film were most likely the result of (co-Director) Alan Mak's influence, if you ask me. I would have liked to have seen more done with the Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen characters, but Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang were both excellent, I thought. A very nice high point for the HK film industry, in what was otherwise a lacklustre year. The film went some ways to halt the local industry from being totally extinguished altogether. The piece you are looking for from the demo at the beginning of the film is from a popular singer whose discs are often used to demo equipment in the region. The Pinyin version of her name is Cai Qin, and the English title of the song in question is 'Those Were The Days'. Can't help with the interconnects, sorry..I wasn't paying attention, and it's been a few years since I saw the film.
Supposedly, one of the lead actors (Andy Lau?) became an audiophile as a result of doing this movie...was intrigued by the scene, so he checked out some audio stores and was hooked...
Looks like Scorcese is doing a 'remake' with Matt Damon & Leonardo DiCaprio + Nicholson...release 2006
