"Return to Paradise" is one of my favorite movies...but I could not stand "Brokedown Palace". IMHO, they are nothing alike, story-wise or in anyway else."Return to Paradise" is a story based on the "prisoner's dilemna"...a favorite statistics model used to illustrate expected outcome and range. But beyond that, it is a strong character-driven story that manages to avoid the cliches of foreign prisons and corrupt government officials. The ending was particularly "non-Hollywood"...unexpected but very believable, very satisfying, and leaving enough (but not too much) room for people to debate the decisions of the characters involved.
"Brokedown Palace" was IMHO a total Hollywood effort, full of cliches, full of plot holes, and a completely predictable and an ending that had a technobeat and a prisoner looking at 30 years with a smile on her face because she "made the right decision".
Follow Ups:
I enjoyed both. Both are about young Americans being caught with drugs in a southeast Asian country with very strict drug laws and their attempts to free themselves.
