It has a lot going for it, noir-wise, but...here again, the lead character is such a louse, with no redeeming value, that it's hard to care much what happens to him. Yes, the acting, casting, editing, cinematography, and realism are first-rate...but its still a two-dimensional portrait of a character.
Dassin was brilliant in showing the humanity of Cristo for his dad, Gregorius, and the fat Greek club owner's pure love for his tawdry double-crossing moll...but the film ultimately fails by not making Widmark's character as human.
Worth seeing but NOT the classic it's made out to be. I don't know if Widmark had the depth to portray Fabian any better...
Follow Ups:
...Widmark's character, while totally despicable, is very 3-dimensional based upon all his foibles. True, we don't empathize with him, but I think that's the point. We're supposed to see the dark side of humanity (and not just his character - the nightclub owner and his wife are equally monstrous) without any sentimental redemption. The only sympathetic characters, IMO, are Gene Tierney's, Herbert Lom's, and Grigorius.
You may love to watch paint dry. Even some very nice designer paint. How about even a one line blurb. Or are your opinions your only concern. Hmmm. People who are only interested in their own opinions? They have a name for them, don't they?
and ad hominem?
Oh, yeah, "bores." (Or is it dingleberries 'cause they're always hanging around?)
Let's keep score: In response to Rico's post about Mad Dog Love, rather than add anything insightful about the film, you criticize the content of his post. Then in response to "Spring...", you regurgitate what I previously posted, adding nothing insightful, then again criticize the content of the post. In response to me asking you for some cogent, original argument (your work, not someone else's) in response to a post, you provide a two word retort, asking me to do your work. Who is the stalker here? What is that phrase about someone who likes to type just to see themselves type? Diarrhea of the keyboard? What is worse than diarrhea of the keyboard? Someone whose diarrhea is not even their own, but another writer's.
