Finest part by far, the Miles Davis track. Searing!Next best, the cinematography. Night visions!
But the major actors (especially Jeanne Moreau) were awful, although the minor roles were filled superbly (those high-living Germans!); and the writing was amateurish.
No murderer as cool about it as our man would just forget to remove the rope he used to climb through the window with. Geez! But that's the main plot point.
Nor would his lover/accomplice (the victim's wife) make herself a figure around town all night looking for the guy (who's trapped in the elevator when he goes back for the rope).
Lovely Jeanne, she's walking in the rain and her "do" isn't even mussed.
But the flick does have its rewards, as said, not the least of which is what happens in and with the perp's car while he's trapped. Stupid klutz, he left the key in the ignition!
Which is the second unbelievable plot point.
Follow Ups:
add Dingo, Siesta and The Hot Spot to the list of movies to avoid
Ascenseur is the best of this sorry lot as a film and as a soundtrack
The Hot Spot is Miles, John Lee Hooker and Taj Mahal playing blues and is quite salvageable too (as a Soundtrack!!)

Not only played but improvised on the spot as well.
