other than car was less gizmo oriented. I think it is not what the public demands as much as what studio execs would rather do -- it is far harder to write a good plot, character and idea than it is to pile on the effects. There is only so much one can do with the bond character -- it is limited meat - so piling on the effects to take up some time away from having to write a story is easier.
It's a shame because some of the new bonds have had a good idea. A bond "out of time" and Dent reminding him of it -- but alas the writer who had the idea likely was forced by studio execs to turn it into crap to get bigger audiences.
Ralph Fienes was asked to be the next James Bond -- he said he wanted it to be like the books or the First two -- a study of the character as a government approved monster (which is really what Bond as a person would be like) - an assassin of little remorese. He wanted a character study piece - no gadgets. Well suffice it to say Mr. Fiennes is working on a film with the City of God director instead, and the next james Bond film will have the Blue Screen trotted out once again for 50% of the movie.
