I haven't seen it since '77 and it's a vague forgotten memory. It's coming to Chelsea Classics and I'm thinking of checking it out.Why ? - In my opinion , Scorcese , even at his worst- is "Big Screen" worthy. His recent Leonardo DiCaprio romps sorely lack in the story telling dept. but are fun to watch , cinematic beauties (despite the eternal 13 year old, L.D.)
DeNiro was pushing the envelope back then and Liza is always capable of a shrill, if not good performance.
Follow Ups:
prior to the movie's premiere at a benefit concert at the LA Forum in 1977....People were on their feet for a standing O at the end of the song...Certainly prompted me to see the film which I enjoyed. I loved the "filmed on a soundstage" quality to the film...Reminded me of the Hollywood musicals of the 40's and 50's...DeNiro's portrayal of the obnoxious musician was great and Minnelli's long-suffering wife was wonderful as well. No one can cry on screen with such a heartfelt emotion like Minnelli...as witnessed in this film as well as Cabaret....The DVD features an extended musical number which was cut from the film. Scorcese proves that he is comfortable in any genre....Certainly not his best but testament to his considerable talent....
Maybe I'll just get dinner...and rent it some rainy day. I thought it might be a bad sign that I saw it in '77 and can't remember a thing. I recently did a "refresher watch" of "True Confessions" ... Still a disappointment after all these years. Thanks for the NY-NY viewpoints. -Jim
"True Confessions" was directed by Ulu Grossbard.

Sorry , I didn't make my post very clear - I was responding to the posts illustrating DeNiro's so-so performance in "NY, NY" NOT Scorcese .
The posts brought to mind his bland & stiff performance in "True Confessions".... a disappointing & ugly little film IMO.
Thanks -Jim
Originally, he was scheduled to play the cop and Duval the priest but a bet developed between them as to who was the more versatile.
The same thing happened in a comedy between Belushi and Ackyroyd years earlier (guess which film?).

Yes - I thought that DeNiro's performance in "True Confessions" was flat . To me , he almost appeared to be trying to remember his lines - which foreshadowed his many weak performances of late. After seeing this movie twice I still have no idea what he was going for , nor do I understand or have any insight into his character. Was he an intense , spiritual man ? Or a galavanting golfing priest? A charismatic dynamo? I dunno ! When DeNiro is "on" his characters simmer and capture my imagination . In this film , for me this did not happen. This is what I meant by "flat" - But by no means do I think he should he have played it as a "mobster" ... or as Rupert Pupkin.

this scorcese movie is his weakest movie . bad script that has no depth at all , and it's long long. rhu
I own this one and have watched it several times, trying to like it. I don't. I just could never empathize with the characters.
what was Scorcese thinking?
I like some of the musical numbers and recreations of NY nightclub sets but it's overall not enough to salvage the film
