Just been through this delightful b&w Robert Wise film of hysterical women & rational scientists..think I gotta check out more stuff from the past after having been ambushed by Swordfish.
Follow Ups:
You should read the novel by Shirley Jackson. Absolutely excellent and the first and last paragraphs of the book will send chills.I also agree with the others about "Hell House". Excellent and both should be in anyone's collection of haunted house flicks.
I haven't seen it in many years, but I have enjoyed it the times I have seen it. Russ Tamblyn—what a wisenheimer.
This was actually filmed in new England although it is supposed to take place in New Hampshire.
Its Ok. Good people in it.
Check out "The Legend of Hell House", if you haven't already. Its one of my favorite haunted house movie. Not scarey, but lots of fun.

Although it isn't as "good" and respected as "The Haunting" - I prefer "The Legend Of Hell House" as a rainy day popcorn movie. The Richard Matheson screenplay is spooky and eventful.
Best of all ... Roddy McDowall's character (who is haunted by the memory of his past)has a unforgettable crazed wide eyed expression of dread during the entire film. He also speaks his lines like his life depends on his every syllable!
I agree. Roddy McDowall is wonderfull in it. Makes the movie.
I love the ending too.
