All that talk about Das Boot being about the scary claustrophobic environment got me thinking. Has anyone ever made a movie about a tank crew? Talk about TRUE claustrophoby! At least they could move around in a sub. But take three or four guys glued to their seats with all the horrible noise and gun powder gases - and you got one super-stressful environment. And if that's not enough, imagine it now crawling along the bottom of a river, fifteen feet under water with its snorkel barely making it above the surface... Imagine now that there is an alien in the gun breech - and you got a perfect plot for George Lucas.So, anyone remembers any tank crew movies? I recall a couple of Russian ones, but don't remember the titles. One was about that legend - the Russian POW is ordered to run the disarmed T-34 through its paces while the German anti-tank crews are testing their weapons. He escapes, destroys few anti-tank guns and their crews, and for days runs over the German roads creating a lot of horror.
When he is finally caught, the German general tell him before shooting him: "You are the best soldiers I have ever met, but the best soldier must be in the German army!".
Any other movies about those brave sacrificial guys?

Catch-22 is claustrophobic, but it's about a plane, not a tank.
How about this one - White Sun of The Desert? All those wide-plain desert war films are strangely claustrophobic to me. The scene in the oil tank(!) is a masterpiece.
The one you mentioned is probably the Zhavoronok film from the sixties.
The worst would be Three Tank Crew and a Dog(loved it when I was a kid).Good call on the Sahara, Scott!
Superb list Dmitry - I have added The Beast and The Battle of El-Alamein to my viewing list (great for those nights when you're feeling a little "tanked up."Might as well add "Tank Girl" to the list too.... (not).
PS - Speaking of planes, check out "Dawn Patrol" about WWI fighter pilots if you get a chance - it's excellent.

I am also taking with me the list of 37 Fernandel movies that were released in the US - will see how well the store does on this one. Plus the two Bunuels that you mentioned before.

Yes, ...but I would not put it in the 'claustrophobic' catogory. Great movie, no questions about it.

I still have more lists to go through, though. Next in line are Gabin and Bourvil. No great expectation, but even just a few will do...
Victor - I'm scratching my head trying to recall the name of this one... but many years ago I saw a old B/W war movie in which a cargo ship was torpedoed by a german submarine... in one particularly horrific scene there is a lone sailor trapped below decks in the engine room.... the ship is sinking and the room is being flooded with thousands of gallons of oil... for what seemed like forever you watch him desperately struggle until he finally drowns in the stinking black goop.... what a nightmare... I cannot think of a more horrible way to die.On a slightly less horrific note, the history channel has been running an absolutely superb documentary on WWI that is available as 8-hour set on VHS tape for $99.... the footage is astounding, and there are several interviews with 100+ year old vets who recount their part in the war... the terrible conditions they endured are simply heartbreaking and the footage showing the rapid progression of "mechanical warfare" offers a frightening insight into man's capacity to create new and more effective weapons to destroy itself... after seeing this series I really did come to understand meaning behind the phrase "war is hell"... and I'm not ashamed to admit that I weeping freely at much of what I saw. Just a terrible, terrible time in our history.
