Are dvds copy-protected? Will it be possible to dub them onto a future dvd-r?

I hink someone said they experienced problems copying them to VHS Mart 23:03:43 08/11/00 (0)
However, I heard copying them to Beta was OK. Maybe it's format sensitive. Maybe PCs can do a bit perfect burn?
But, with the advent of DVD-As, future coding is in the works. However, MP3 may eventually make copywriting moot to the industry. Whether it cripples said industry is another story (or chapter at least).
