No.I suppose a certain particularly ugly breed of lefty foaming mouth feminism hasn't helped, but the real credit an honor belongs to good old fashioned crazy nutjob American conservativism.
As in, "sweet little baby jesus loves all them movies about killing and maiming, but its a sin against the good lord to watch a movie about sex. Gotta hide that kinda filth from the kids".
As is the case with our political leaders, we are infinitely and irredeemably deserving of the the movies we have.
Follow Ups:
Feminism started it, religious conservatives certainly propelled it but rampant "mommy"ism and political correctness have played a part as well. Since movies count on the bubblegum set for their profits . . . well . . . you get the picture. It is difficult to think of a confluence of diverse political currents more damaging to the creative arts.
As an aside and to demonstrate possibly all three points but certainly yours and mine, when Conan the Barbarian came out I saw it in the theatre and there was a "mommy" beside me, young son in tow. The movie had already displayed much blood and gore when the scene where the nubile young maiden turns into a witch was shown. There was, you may recall, a bare breast. Whereupon, "mommy" hustled her son out of the theatre saying "You can't trust anything anymore?"
