and... liked it much better than before. I'm not a fan of any of the three principals, Benning, Duvall, or Costner, so I had a lot of baggage to deal with, yet I still enjoyed it and the performances.
I'm not necessarily a big man but I can admit I was wrong :--)

He's played several versions of this same character, most notably in the TV series "Lonesome Dove." The writers were smart to give him most of the talking parts in "Open Range".

I think that the film style was intentionally chosen to create a perspective of you being there watching the action unfold. Notice how the camera work is completely different when the action takes a break to follow townspeople leaving the town while the bullets are flying.I suspect that the film was probably intended to be an accurate potrayal, and I suspect that when there was a gunfight, people ran for cover rather than congregate to watch the bullets fly.
