I like "Hidden Fortress" a lot. "Throne of Blood" is another Kurosawa film that doesn't seem to get mentioned as much as some of the others, but it's also great. Saw "Ghost Dog" recently...worth seeing and interesting the whole way through, but in common with the two other films I've seen by that director(Jim Jarmusch-"Down by Law" and "Deadman"), it left me feeling sort of empty after it was over. I'm a Forest Whittaker fan, and he was very good as the samurai-hitman title character.
Follow Ups:
I'm not really familiar with him. I saw one of his early films, think it was Stranger than Paradise or something like that. I guess I could call it interesting. Low budget, not hollywood, quirky, about a girl immigrant to the US and her experiences.
...'Dead Man' with Johnny Depp, music by Neil Young and a superb cameo role by Iggy Pop as a 'cowboy transvestite'!!! Great film.
Thanks.
If you want a quintessential Jarmusch film, rent the "Night on Earth".
Benigni is amazing in it.
In Jarmusch's down by law?
BTM
Thanks. I'll consider it. Was Begnini the guy who made an ass of himself at the Oscars? Usually that's the kind of thing I stay far away from.I'm not an Oscar kind of person.
Perhaps he made asses of everybody else in the joint? Did you ever think of that? He has been practicing the same schtick for years, jumping chairs and tackling people on Italian tv. Americans don't know that.
You just reminded me of that poor priest and his last ride.
