...ended up loving it. Remembering that this film was ripped badly by some reviewers, I rented it figuring that Anthony Hopkins would turn in an interesting performance even if the rest of the film was dreck. It's long(about 2 3/4 hours), over-the-top, self-consciously stagey, beautiful to look at, and a heck of a lot of fun. Forget the bad reviews, sit back, and revel in Shakespeare's wicked sense of humor augmented by this director's(whose name escapes me) outlandish take on Titus Andronicus.
Follow Ups:
The visuals from the trailer grabbed my interest but I never made it to the theaters. Thanks for the reminder I'll look for a rental this weekend. Jessica Lange nude should be worth the price of addmission.

Did you rent the DVD? I am tempted, as it is a two-disc set with a making-of documentary and lots of extra features on the second DVD.
No, I saw the VHS version. Have you seen the film? Wondering what you think of it.
I did rent the dvd version and it is full of lots of stuff (2 disc set). To be honest, I thought that the story was great (Will S. does it again) and the acting was very good but that Taymor is just too wed to the stage. It really was very "staged" in look and feel. Just a bit too pretty and pretentious for my liking. I agree, however, that Hopkins does a very nice job with it, and it was nice to see one of Shakespeare's more grim features brought to the screen (makes other plays brought to the screen seem downright "light and cheerful").As for the dvd quality, it was a very good transfer. Pictures were sharp and crisp and looked very good (lots of dark and shadows so if you are using a LCD or DLP projector, you might be disappointed). Sound was good but nothing spectacular although the orchestral elements were very impressive at times.
