... to out perform LDs. They minimized banding (posterization). They reduced jitter (picture jumping). Now, they just have to tackle frame dropping (strobing), edging that doesn't look stairs (aliasing) & temporal synchronization of audio & video. Once they get it fixed I'll buy a DVD player too. Right now they still look like GIF movies, IMHO. Although, I've yet to see a CAL CL-25. I almost saw a CL-20 down at CSA Audio but although it was hooked up, they weren't playing it that day in their empty store.
Follow Ups:
I am not quite sure which players you have been looking at or
what DVD's.The Cals are pretty good! I owned a CL-20 and moded the audio
section, which made it pretty competitive with the most expensive
cd sepereates out there if not better than most.I got sick and tired of the reliability issues and after discussing
improvements in technology of IC chips, from a friend who did
the mods and keeps up on this stuff, I decided to buy a Marantz
DVD 18 THX model. Half the retail price and I got a sweet deal
on a Refurb. Did a few basic mods myself based on his suggestions.Picture on it dusts the Cal, it is not even close. Sound was as
good stock as the Cal except it was a little closed in and rolled
off. Bass was better and the midrange more even. With about 50.00
in parts etc the thing clobbered my modded Cal which was a good
bit better sonically than the standard CAL. None of these mods
had any effect on the picture, but they weren't intended too.So check out the latest top o the line Pioneers and Marantz DVD's
the Toshiba's are also pretty good.Happy watching,
James W.
What reliability issues with CL-20s? Just wondering, I own a CL-10.Have been viewing top of the line Marantz DVD players, but was hoping to check-out the CL-25 multi-video engines for improvement.
....just my 2¢

Have you seen any DVD's lately? I'm not talking about 1-2 in a store demo either. Just like CD's, DVD mastering quality varies among titles and studios.I stopped into Best Buy the other day. They now devote 85% of the movie floor space to DVD. DVD is here to stay. Decent DVD players are below $300.
With all your LD talk, I'm suprised you don't listen to music via vinyl.

I would but a good TT just cost too damn much. I keep hoping that SACD will cure this for me.DVDs still look like network's rebroadcast of Stargate SG-1 to me. I constantly get distracted by the perception of moving pixels instead of moving pictures like a GIF files. & complete frame dropage which is extremely annoying. I agree with you that DVDs are here to stay. It just looks to me like the way original CD players sounded. I'm sure they'll eventually correct them. BTW, I agree some DVDs are just coasters. I'm not talking about those. Right now the biggest flaw are the expansion rates which makes me wonder what the CL-25 looks like with it's redundant parallel processing.
