I am angry my wife rented that marvel, and I am angry I spent two hours watching that crap.If one simply wanted to make a long movie that included all the worst attributes of American cinema - that would be it. Weak script, idiotic situations, lousy acting (for the most part) and cancer to the rescue when film starts losing its lame drive... all that combine to produce something we all should be ashamed about.
Terms of Endearment was a quintessential weak American film. The maker of Upside apparently decided that wasn't enough, and frankly, gave us a remake. Like all remakes before it, this one sucks much more than the original, and of course you have to watch the wooden "acting" of Kevin Costner - where is old Jack when you need him?
Dull, stupid, sappy, in the worst tradition of bad Hollywood production... what will the world say?

I mean the Garvin guy, of course. But you have to admit, the busty daughter was worth a few shots - especially in her night gown.
Been in NYC for a few days, so I am now only able to respond to your query. It has been some time since I have seen the film, but I did laugh at the dinner table scene when the daughter brings home her older boyfriend, and his head explodes. Totally unexpected, and Joan Allen perfectly plays the scene. I found the producers mannerisms humourous when he first met Joan Allen's daughter, and then decides to hire her. Undoubtedly there were more.I found it to be a human film, intelligently written. The ending was unpredictable, and brought into a perfect resolution all that had come before. If you do not like Costner, well, that is not the product of the film, but the product of your bias. Why you do not like Costner, and then watch a film in which he stars is beyond me. What is that old saying about some people needing something to complain about?
I also appreciated how the film was able to provide us numerous characters, but all their stories were fully fleshed, told. I liked how Allen's husband has abandoned her. Most films, the world over, would spend their time on the emotions, anger, being hurt, being resentful, etc., that the abandonee must go through, ignoring the fact that life goes on, that kids must be taken to school, meals prepared, mortgages paid, homework checked, etc. I am not sure that is "sappy." Perhaps you prefer the European preference to depict the subject artfully spending two hours on the screen wallowing in self pity, and pithy friends commiserating with them. But I am not sure that film is any better. And the ending is anything but sappy.
Well my boringness did overcome even that...I was totally lustless....
But I may not have this Borgia/ Rasputin temperament of yours....Ha-ha...
I usually try to find at least something in the film to like. It was very hard to stay with this one.I particularly enjoyed the huge wedding, with pavilions, live band, and... around twenty guests? There was 20 foot empty space around each guest, so they would not bump into each other.
Well how much gain can you take on a three days diet?No with this one I could let my negative feelings runs free.
"If one simply wanted to make a long movie that included all the worst attributes of American cinema - that would be it.....".... Victor,
Its hard to believe they managed to get all your issues with American cinema in one flick! Although, I couldn't think of a more fitting "actor" to lead the charge than Costner. I wonder if they considered Keanu for the gig - he's a close second to Kevin C.
Oh, you should see it! They did manage to shoehorn quite a bit in it.
whose fathers, boyfriends and/or husbands also exhibit zero humor, cardboard cutout body language, and the speech intonation and delivery of a talking clockSuggest his characterless appeal is universally identifiable; and "safe". "Gee, that could be my monosyllabic dumb hunk of a husband up there on the screen!"
There must be an awful lot of men fall into this dubious category; as Costner has been around for a while
Consider myself fairly warned against "Upside" but just having Kevin Costner on board should have been warning enough, his most appealing role to date is in the Big Chill as the corpse, where the editor wisely saw fit to leave him on the cutting room floor
He's just passable as an immature cowboy in "Silverado"
Grins
I only learned that fact when the movie started... but you know what? As dull as he was, he may in fact have been the bright spot in that dreadful film.
