Whether you've seen the short lived Firefly series or not, this flick delivers without requiring the viewer to play catch up on the episodic history. In fact, it's so good that I imagine a lot of filmgoers will run out and buy the Firefly series DVD after catching a screening of the movie! Yes, there are revelations for those who've watched the series (sorry, no spoilers), but the build up required to clue-in an unitiated film audience is amazingly brief & skillfully handled by Writer/Director Joss Whedon. If I had to provide a rating, I'd give this rollicking SF adventure flick four stars on a five star scale. ****/*****Two or three interesting films open this weekend, but if you've never seen the original Firefly series & only have time to catch one film, Serenity is worth your time. Trust me, the Firefly cast, most making their big screen debut in this film, WILL grow on you! :o)
Follow Ups:
.... great sci-fi flick. And one with an a-typical point of view. Unlike any of the Star Trek series we don't see space from a state-of-the-art "warp 9 capable" inter-stellar battle cruiser. The crew aren't spit-and-polish academy types . No careers or high ideals are being persued here. Rather, we have a rag-tag group of individuals scratching out their survival by taking on the occasional honest cargo hauling job, but more often running contraband product from one planet to the next. Payoffs don't always happen and the Captains' biggest fear is running out of fuel and supplies in deep space.I love this setup. Although the post American Civil War costumes, dialects, background music and constumes could just as easily be swapped out for an even earier time in world history. It could have been taken from the barouque period, a time of exploration, lawlessness and piracy. Ala Captain Blood. But the show works for me as it is. Both this movie and the series, which has been playing on the Sci-Fi channel this summer.
I'm gratified that this group of actors, and creator Joss Whedon, are getting the big screen break that they are, and that the show Firefly is finally getting the exposure that it was denied in the initial showings. The episodes were shown out of sequence and only once before having the plug pulled on it. Obviously, someone high up at Fox didn't like Sci-Fi.

I've never seen the Firefly series upon which this movie is allegedly based. I had trouble with the believability of the premise/background, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the movie. I might even go back and see what the Firefly Universe is all about.
One of the more interesting villains, kind of reminded me of Spock of StarTrek for some reason. But it did bother me (spoiler alert!)
that the almighty alliance couldn't completely nullify the video broadcast as some hoax. Video evidence, even in 2005, is completely manufacturable..
...to paraphrase a regretful Dan Rather. The video broadcast itself may not change too many minds about the Alliance. The problem the Alliance faces is that the evidence still exists (a planet with 3 million dead bodies), and the curious can corroborate and verify the story by going there themselves. So what should the Alliance do? Blockade visits to the planet? Release a deadly biological agent on its surface? Nuke the whole thing? Any of these actions would tend to verify the content of the video by screaming "cover-up." The Alliance should have nuked the planet in the first place.
Miranda was almost unapproachable because Reivers surround it, and Reivers don't appear to be unintelligent either, they're just violently unstable and canibalistic.
They are also evidence against the Alliance, esp. if one is captured and the cause of the condition is determined. Remove all the evidence.
I don't agree about the video evidence being less valuable because it's manufacturable. As we know even in today's culture, it isn't just visual information that determines actions and reactions, but also suspicions based on the cumulative experience acquired through word of mouth, film, photographs, testimonials, etc., so gradually informed opinins are fueled by both rumor and evidence. The Reivers were a feared entity in the Firefly/Serenity universe and many folks inhabiting these outer planets had seen what these inexplicably crazed creatures were capable of, but no one had an explanation for their existance, ...until now. Obviously the United Federation of Planets would want to keep this information suppressed. ;^)
...saw it last night. Never saw the TV show. It was a totally engaging, escapist action cowboy/sci-fi flick. Very well done with a good sense of humor - a lot of fun. I'd give it a 'B-'.
