The music from the movie West Side Story is adapted from the original musical.
95% of what you hear in the film was composed as a stage musical. Bernstein added a bit of underscoring but the songs, dances and most of the conective music were composed for the original Broadway production.
Now if somebody did a list of great music from 20th century American Theater and left off West Side Story - then I'd be honked.

  The movie "West Side Story" contains virtually no music composed for film i.e. a *film score*.
  BTW, Out of Africa's score doesn't contain 99% Mozart.
