Just watched "Unforgiven" the Clint Eastwood Gene Hackman Morgan Freeman thing. Not for the first time, but it's been years since I last saw it.
What a wonderfully conflicted story line.
"We all got it coming" is right. None of us is very nice when it comes down to it.
Lovely three dimensional characters, no one entirely good, no one entirely bad. The ho's and their grim determination for revenge; the sadistic sheriff and his sympathy to violent men who cut up ho's.
All in all a good time to watch.
What other such gems are out there? Not specifically western genre, but back to stories v. special effects.
"Run Lola Run" was another in this vein.
"Nein" she says and it happens again, differently this time. Ultimately when the characters step out of their own needs and desires do things finally go well.
"Bandits" with their weird flaunting the law, countdown to a Butch Cassidy finish.
Others?
Follow Ups:
....How about "Wolfen"---you know, the movie about the guy who discovers that wild wolves are living in the cities, unknown to us humans, and preying on the weak among us...(shiver).

hey there
the Piano is one of the greats. I think a simple way to measure how great and cohesive a movie is is to compare the soundtrack to the musics played in the movie. In the piano the music is so attached to the story that the soundtrack sounds so out of context. The little girl was great. The only criticism is that Keitel didn't have to show his butt.
