I don't think he is actually the rangiest actor of all time but he certainly was one of the most influencial. He more than any other actor helped usher in a new era of realism in acting. I think one need only watch a Streetcar named desire to see that transition incarnate. the old school stylized school of acting from Vivian Lee stands in stark contrast to the realism and rawness of Brando.
Follow Ups:
but when he got older he was clearly trading on his reputation and in his later roles he needed a speech therapist (and a damn good kick in the ass) The angry, vital young man became the maestro of pose and mumbleHad James Dean lived, Brando would have always been in his shadow
to be convinced of his considerable talent! Remember it is a 24 year old man playing 60 something....Had he lived, Brando would not have worn the crown....
he starred on Broadway in "Streetcar" and in the movie, as well.
He also was a "kid" when he made The Wild Ones.
as any performance in film.
"Last Tango" "The Appaloosa" and "The Godfather", "The Wild Ones" "Streetcar" "The Fugitive Kind" ...His great performance of a repressed homosexual in the Army in "Reflections In A Golden Eye"
or Terry Malloy in "Waterfront"
and his insane and humorous reading of "Dr Moreau"
... his tortured presence in "Appocalyse Now"
the multi-dimensional Cowboy "Matt Fletcher" in "One Eyed Jacks". A GREAT Western!
Brando's character is Kid Rio, last name not indicated.
"Matt Fletcher" is in Appaloosa - Rio is "One Eyed" of course - oops nt
