Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa, translated from the Japanese by Charles S. Terry.
An excellent 1000 page novel, which embodies ideas that will become part of your philosophy.

Thanks for the recommendation, my wife studies karate and I just
got back from searching the bookstores in downtown Chicago and found
it. It's only available in hardcover tho.
