Some time ago I posted here my theory that the John Wayne character was the father of kidnaped little Debbie, not her uncle. I propmptly ran into a storm of ridicule and criticism. But today I found this on IMDB:"According to John Wayne in a 1974 interview, John Ford hinted throughout the movie that Ethan had had an affair with his brother's wife, and was possibly the father of Lucy and Debbie. This meant Ethan's thirst for vengeance stemmed not from the murder of his brother, but of the woman Ethan had loved. This was so subtle that many viewers at the time missed it altogether."
Follow Ups:
it was the cinematography at its best. The shot of John Wayne at the
doorframe at the beginning of the fim, and he standing outside and
shot from the inside at the end, how many times I tried to copy that when taking pictures.
Hell Rico, I picked up on that 35 years ago.But in any event Texans didn't need any special personal reasons to hate Comanches, the Comanches were predatory, merciless brigands who harassed the Texas frontier for 40 years. Add to that the border riever mentality of the Kentuckians and Tennesseans who settled Texas and the memory of Great Lakes Indians and Shawness descending across the Ohio for booty and hair and Hell, you had all kinds of fellas like Ethan runnin' around.
Rico,
Even if Ethan was Debbie's biological father, why would it necessarily follow that 100% of his vengence was reserved for Martha, and none for Aaron? IYO, did Ethan have no love at all for Aaron? Is it possible that his love for Martha was simply greater than his love for his brother and that some of his vengence was due to his brother's death? ~AH
I really can't answer based on what is in the film. All I can point to is the obvious strong feelings between Ethan and Martha. Part of Ethan's obsession is due to the fact that his mother was killed by Companches (we see that on the gravestone the little girl hides behind.
Well next time I will see it I will try to find " the hint "....
But a storm?

There's more than one. The sister in law stares lovingly at Wayne and at one point kisses his coat. Wayne also mistakes one girl for the other. Then there's Wayne's obsession with finding the Natalie Wood character.
I will revisited it. Anyway a very good film. On this we agree...

"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"

Sorry, my memory is faulty. The storm came from a local film chat group I was in at the time, not this board. My apologies.
