Slim pickings at the video store, my friend said.Holy cow.
1- Amaturish, made-for-E!-movie level directing
2- About 50% of the special effects were laughably bad
3- Insipid, unoriginal story (It's a remake in a remake! Golly!)
4- No sense of pacing, some scenes last too long, others are too short
5- The lead actors didn't seem to know what to do in their scenes, and looked like they were improvising a bunch of random emotions and movements
6- Terrible editing
7- Annoying, poorly used music
8- Seemingly random and unexplained sound effectsI think that covers everything. And now, the good, for those who deserve it:
1- Michael Caine, Steve Carrell, Jason Schwartzman and Shirley MacLaine were pretty good, Michael Caine especially
2- Michale Caine's character would always enter a scene in a pretty clever way
3- There was a short gag about a ketchup bottle that I thought was totally random and kind of funny, in a Pythonesque way
4- When Isabel would use her special witch powers, the special effects were sometimes rather ingenious and well doneCaine and MacLaine had a really interesting, but half-baked, subplot that would have made a better movie than the main storyline. Otherwise it was a pretty bad movie all around.
Score: 20/100, with points going soley to the supporting cast
/*Music is subjective. Sound is not.*/
Follow Ups:
This movie was painful to watch. Incredibly, they got bad performances out of both Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. They made no use of Will's talent. They had no grasp or appreciation of the original show. There was no Larry Tate, enough said. The only mildly amusing part for me was Steve Carell's uncle Arthur (actually impersonating Paul Lynde's version) in the last 5 minutes of the movie.
